Peter Brann Explains Why Ranked Choice Voting May Go National

In an article for Campaigns & Elections, published on December 4, 2019, “Why Maine’s Ranked Choice Voting Could Go National,” partner Peter J. Brann explains why Maine’s first–in–the–nation use of ranked choice voting in federal elections in 2018 may mark the beginning of a nationwide trend. Brann, along with B&I attorneys, Michael Carey and Eamonn Hart, represented Rep. Jared Golden (ME–2), in defeating a lawsuit filed to undo the results of the ranked choice vote in Maine’s second congressional district after the 2018 election. Based on that experience, he argues that ranked choice voting has not only proven successful at the ballot box in Maine, but also now in the courts—paving the way for its adoption in other jurisdictions.
